The Analytical Psychology of Wikimedia

Once, when having dinner with Sue Gardner, she explained her fondness for the MBTI test, and her belief in how it should be used to run the Wikimedia Foundation. I nodded politely and smiled. Possibly not the best way to run such an eclectic group of people, by pigeonholing them into controversial categories, and favoring one type over the other, but who am I to argue with Sue? After all, as she is prone to remind us, she is a professional.

It seems, however, that some of the other staff are less than comfortable with the pigeonholing too, and one even had the courtesy to send me a screen shot of the current chart, as it appears in the office wiki. So, for your reading pleasure, here is the staff of the WMF as they are currently mapped. Before looking any further, can you guess who the Mastermind is? Can you guess who the Field Marshals are? We all know about the countless minions, but is there even a category for horndog? And then, of course, there is the Wikipedia article itself, which currently reads: "While many academic psychologists have criticized the indicator in research literature, claiming that it "lacks convincing validity data," [3][4][5] proponents and sellers of the test cite unblinded anecdotal predictions of individual behavior.[6]" I suppose that can be edited out. Now, how about a similar chart for the Board?

First thought: That's... bizarre. Second thought: I haven't worked in many office situations, so I have to ask: Is that typical?

Danny, notice how Sue's stopped attacking you:

Reminds me of that joke: 'You'll be my best friend forever; you know too much.' Now that the 'disgruntled former employer' argument fell flat, looks like it's dawned on Sue that it's probably best not to attack this particular bees nest... I get the impression that this 'professional' is actually a bit out of her depth.

This isn't the first time I've heard of a US-based outfit going the MBTI-pigeonhole route (PlanetOut did it when they were launching) but I wish the image were a bit clearer so that one could read it.

Wikipedia seems to be being taken over by too many policy wonks (deletionists and wikilaywers) with too much emphasis on creating a 'democratic' talking shop and losing sight of the declared intention to create a free encyclopedia.

I too have seen MBTI implemented at offices.

It's crap and has no place in a professional office. Sue, like many other exec, seems sold on buzzwords and hot trends.

This isn't how you run a company. On that note, shouldn't it be your PR junkie's job to respond to the media so often and publicly?

Maybe they should stop playing around on the computers with flow charts, theories and tests and start actually doing some REAL work? If these people actually worked at a company, they'd have been fired for sitting around and spending too much time navel gazing.

This is, in my mind, a shockingly poor managerial decision for many reasons. The MBTI is based on Jungian personality theory, which in today's psychological schools of thought, a pretty esoteric and outdated school of thought. Jung, after all, believed in UFO's.

Another of this tests many problems is that it gauges personal preferences on strictly yes or no questions, and more often than not, people who take the test come away feeling as though the test asked all the wrong questions, and that the answers to the wrong questions were remarkably un-nuanced.

In the end, the MBTI is a very cheap, unsophisticated evasion of using your brain to understand people, which is why upper level managers usually have IQs of 150 or higher in the first place. It's about as sophisticated as using racial stereotypes to understand how and why people do things, and what they will do in the future.

If I were for example Brion Vibber, a brilliant, talented guy who could work anywhere, I'd be really pissed off that my whole mode of being was
summarized by four mostly meaningless letters, by the person who pays my salary.

I *used* to thing Sue Gardner was the real thing. Now I'm having second and third thoughts about that assessment.

Erik's all alone in his category.

I'm confused. Is there any actual evidence that the MBTI was actual used for anything at Wikimedia Foundation? If so, for what?

@12:54

I think Danny's point was that she likes the test and "her belief in how it should be used to run the Wikimedia Foundation." Whether she's implemented it or not remains to be seen.

None of this matters. On paper, Wales is still in charge. "EC" doesn't stand for "Emeretus Chair", it stands for "EXECUTIVE Chair". So Jimbo, on paper, outranks Florence and everyone else. He has everyone fooled.

What I think is truly the funniest part of this ... SUE HASN'T GOT A CLUE AS TO WHAT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN "I" AND "E" ARE! She has placed all of the "professionals" she has hired in the "E" category without the understanding that the definition of the "E" is somebody who requires the approval of others and the need for outside validation. Is she saying that she is unable to know her performance without the reassurances of others? Obviously she has learned the buzz words without the knowledge -- what a professional! She has placed Brion and Erik in the roles of being the only people who are self-contained and without the need for the approval of others. I think the community knew this about Erik, but not Brion. Congratulations Brion!
