One of the great debates of the Internet today is who founded Wikipedia. Jimmy Wales has one story, and Larry Sanger has another, but I want to suggest the third story—Danny's story—and offer an entirely new perspective.
"Danny's story?" you ask. No, I have absolutely no right to claim credit for Wikipedia, to go on the speaker's circuit, and to receive awards for some brilliant insights that I did not have. Instead, I'd like to mention three remarkable people whose contributions are too often overlooked.
The Number One spot in the saga should certainly go to Rick Gates. "Rick who? Is that Bill Gates's little brother?" I have no idea about the latter question, but as for his role, I will cite Wikipedia: "On October 22, 1993, Gates presumably proposed in the Usenet newsgroup alt.internet.services to collaboratively create an encyclopaedia in [sic] the Internet." It seems as if Rick Gates first raised the idea of putting an Internet encyclopedia together through a collaborative process—though he called it Interpedia, it sounds a lot like Wikipedia to me.
The Number Two spot should go to Ward Cunningham, one of the nicest, most unassuming people I have ever had the honor to meet. To quote Wikipedia, "he started programming the software WikiWikiWeb in 1994 and installed it on the website of his software consultancy, …" In other words, as the developer who created the very first wiki, Ward Cunningham can be credited with adding the Wiki to Rick Gates's Pedia.
But that is not all. In 1999, free software guru Richard Stallman proposed "a project to create a free content encyclopedia (licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License) under the auspices of the Free Software Foundation." His GNUpedia was actually launched in January 2001, the same month as Wikipedia. In other words, RMS added that essential byline, "The Free Encyclopedia" to the project.

Why no mention of Ben Kovitz? My understanding is that while Ward Cunningham might have invented the wiki, it was Ben Kovitz who came up with the idea of using a wiki to build an encyclopedia.
By the way, you state that RMS was responsible for Nupedia being released under a free license. That's sort of misleading, as it doesn't point out the existence of the Nupedia Open Content License which predates the use of the GFDL on for Nupedia. It also doesn't mention the whole story of the dispute between JDW and RMS over the naming of GNUPedia. But that story is too long to get into in this simple comment. I'll have to put its telling on my todo list.
Anthony, confusing as it is, GNUpedia is not Nupedia. They are two projects with different names that started at about the same time.
